KASTELLA HOUSE
Athens, Greece
design/completion: 2003 – 2006
area: 220 m2
The project is about a double town-house with independent entrances in Peireas. The sharp slope of the land in both directions, and the views of the sea, is the basic data that determined the layout of the levels of the houses. The entrances are at both ends of the facade separated by a large elevation difference that is determined by the pedestrian street/public staircase. In order to adapt to the sharp slope the houses are articulated at multiple levels.
The spectacular view prompted the prevalence of large openings and semi-enclosed spaces in the back/ east side of the building. In contrast, the front elevation to the pedestrian street remains as closed as possible.
The composition attempts to address the transition from the urban side, that is closed the street, to the open side of the sea view with a hybrid spatial structure of free-plan to the view and room-plan to the city.
